Pregnant Woman Fatally Shot After Returning Home From Baby Shower

Police say a pregnant woman who was returning home from her baby shower was shot and killed in Crescentville on Saturday night.

Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were called to the 6100 block of Palmetto Street just after 8:30 p.m. to report a shooting.

The 32-year-old woman who was 7 months pregnant was carrying baby shower gifts from a Kia Soul into her home when she was shot in the head and her stomach, according to investigators.

“The person who did this couldn’t be more cowardly,” Deputy Commissioner Christine Coulter told 6ABC at the scene overnight.

Asked what the city can do about the continuing gun violence, Coulter said, “We can’t stop people who are intent on shooting somebody … It looks like someone was targeting her.”

The 7-months pregnant woman was rushed to Einstein Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m. Her unborn child was pronounced dead several minutes later, at 9:15 pm.

“We need to get angry and outraged about this to everyone, including elected officials in the city, police officers, and everyone who lives in every house in Philadelphia. This should never happen and it is happening all too often,” Deputy Commissioner Christine Coulter said.

Philadelphia police are investigating whether it was a targeted shooting. Eleven shells were found on the ground.

According to the city data, there have been 491 homicides in Philadelphia as of late Saturday night, up 13% from this time last year. Problems related to gun violence throughout the city have resulted in community gun buybacks and increased community funding for antiviolence initiatives, but residents, including neighbors of the woman killed in Lawncrest on Saturday, are not satisfied with the city’s response to the increased homicide rate.

No arrests have been reported since the report of the fatal shooting.
