2023 Women’s World Cup: England Defeats Nigeria 4-2 (Penalty)

England defeated Nigeria on penalties to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals.

England overcame a significant threat to defeat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties and advance to a World Cup quarterfinal matchup against Colombia or Jamaica after a goalless stalemate. In Brisbane, Bethany England, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood, and Chloe Kelly all scored as they overcame Lauren James’ red card to advance.

After Georgia Stanway and Desire Oparanozie missed their respective opening-round teams’ penalties, Michelle Alozie also missed with Nigeria, giving England the lead. In the final four of the 90 seconds, James planted her studs on Alozie’s back and was ejected for her careless stamp.

She was first given a yellow card, but after referee Melissa Borjas examined her pitch-side monitor at the VAR’s suggestion, the decision was overturned to a straight red.

Since Lauren James received a straight red card, she will undoubtedly miss the quarterfinals.

For the England star, things could get worse because a lengthy suspension is undoubtedly a possibility. It is uncertain whether she will have the opportunity to compete in the event. She was so strong during the group stage, but a moment of insanity cost her and almost cost England.

England will play either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarterfinals, with the two teams playing each other tomorrow in the round of 16.

On Saturday in Sydney, the matchup in the semifinals will begin at 11:30 a.m. BST.

It’s unfair to Nigeria, who played outstandingly in this game. If anything, they were riskier when it was 11 against 11, especially in the 90 minutes.

Kudos to both Teams.
