Panic in Wuse II, Abuja, as a five-storey building under construction partially collapsed on Durban Street, leaving one person with minor injuries.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that it received a distress alert at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2026.
In a statement issued by its Press Unit on Sunday, NEMA said it immediately activated emergency response stakeholders, including the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, while its AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team was deployed to coordinate search and rescue operations.
“Findings at the scene indicated that the incident was minor and involved a five-storey building under construction that had been partially pulled down,” the agency stated.
NEMA confirmed that no life was lost, adding that the injured construction worker was evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The latest incident comes just weeks after another building collapse in Abuja raised fresh concerns over building safety in the FCT.
On September 7, 2026, a three-storey building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, hours after officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Department of Development Control sealed the property and ordered occupants to vacate over structural safety concerns. Reports indicated the building had shown signs of distress before it came down. No casualties were reported.
Before that, on May 16, 2026, a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area, near Gudu Market, killing at least five people and injuring several others.
Following the Durumi tragedy, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered a full investigation, with the developer and site engineer facing possible arrest, and warned developers to comply strictly with building regulations and allow authorities to inspect construction sites.
