A Boat Misfortune: Pregnant Woman, Husband, Children, And Others Die As Boat Drifts Away

According to a coastguard official, seven people from us, including a pregnant lady and her children, perished of hunger after their boat broke down and drifted over 1,100 kilometers to the Kenyan coast.

Survivors described their terrifying three-week journey, which began shortly after 15 family members set sail from the Comoros island of Ndzuwani to France’s Indian Ocean region of Mayotte.

According to Kenya Coast Guard Service head of public affairs, Kenneth Sabila, the boat’s propeller dropped into the water and severe winds drove the vessel towards the Kenyan resort of Malindi, nearly 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) away.

“They were helpless and could not control the boat,” he stated, claiming that they were stranded for 22 days in the Indian Ocean due to the heavy waves.

When food rationing ran out, the pregnant mother, her husband, and two children were among the seven people who died.

Survivors informed Kenya’s Daily Nation that to keep afloat, they were forced to toss their deteriorating bodies overboard.

The eight survivors made it to Kenya on raw fish and saline water and were discovered motionless, exhausted, and dehydrated by local fishermen on Monday.

Mahmoud Hassan, one of the survivors, told the Daily Nation that all 15 people on board belonged to the same family.

Another survivor, Nassiru Tawidu, 28, was quoted as stating through tears, “It’s by God’s grace that I’m alive.”

The boat was in horrible condition, according to one of the fishermen who discovered the survivors, and they could not have lasted one more night on the rough waves.

The Kenyan navy sent medical personnel to attend to them,” said Sabila. He also claimed that authorities had communicated with their family through the Comoros consulate.

The purpose of the family’s journey was unknown at the time.

In recent years, a huge inflow of foreigners from Comoros has been observed by Mayotte.
