Buhari Arrives At Abuja Following His Attendance At The London Summit

President Muhammadu Buhari returned to Abuja on Friday evening after attending the recent Global Education Summit in London, United Kingdom, where he joined other world leaders in pledging to expand financing for the education sector.

During his journey, President Buhari also took advantage of the chance to undertake a medical examination in London, which had been scheduled before.

Co-hosted by two leaders, British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, the Global Education Summit, successfully raised approximately four billion dollars out of a total of five billion dollars intended for the transformation of the education sector in low-income countries, among them Nigeria.

During the summit’s activities, President Buhari appeared on a panel of discussants in front of a live audience, where he was joined by leaders from other African countries, including President Kenyatta, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Faure Eyadema of Togo, and President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi, as well as other African leaders.

Topics covered at the summit included education’s reset – lessons learned from COVID; transforming the child’s learning journey; gender equality in and through education; the Ripple Effect – education’s impact on sustainability; and financing for impact – volume, equity, and efficacy.

As part of the summit, President Muhammadu Buhari vowed to increase the funding for the education sector in Nigeria by as much as 50% over the following two years.

The President said, “We commit to progressively increase our annual domestic education expenditure by 50 percent over the next two years and up to 100 percent by 2025 beyond the 20 percent global benchmark.”

On the fringes of the Global Education Summit, the president met with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Commonwealth Secretary-General, Baroness Patricia Scotland, during his visit to the United Kingdom.

President Buhari and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson discussed the war against different forms of terrorism in Nigeria during bilateral talks, according to the president’s spokesperson, Femi Adesina. The two leaders also agreed that the judicial process should be allowed to take its course.
