Man Spared Jail Time For Beating His Ex Goes To Attack Her

A man returned home to attack his ex-girlfriend again in a matter of hours after being spared jail time for assaulting her.

Jonathan Weaver, 33, was given a suspended sentence after punching off her wing mirror, smashing her car’s windscreen, spitting in her face, hurling a brick at her window, and brandishing a hammer at her.

Weaver, a resident of South Wales’ Ebbw Vale, was previously found guilty of assaulting three previous partners.

On October 6, 2023, Weaver was sentenced by Presiding Justice John Jones of Newport magistrates court to a 16-week prison term, with an 18-month suspension period to allow him to complete a “building better relationships” course.

The man was not given a restraining order as the victim did not ask for one.

Mr Jones warned him: “You need to be absolutely clear how close you went to custody today.

“As acknowledged by your own solicitor, you are seen as a threat to women. Hopefully working with probation gets you off that path.”

Despite this, Weaver attacked his victim again just hours after being released from jail.

The man was intoxicated when he punched her in the face, kicked her while she was on the ground, and destroyed her phone and glasses.

Weaver, of Mount Pleasant Road, admitted to causing criminal damage and assault by beating.

The magistrates imposed an immediate 26-week prison sentence and ordered Weaver to pay £725 in compensation to the victim this time. A two-year restraining order was also issued.

Weaver had a “history of more than a decade of violence towards women,” according to the court during his previous sentencing, and his most recent victim was “petrified” of him.

Two other ex-partners were the targets of two of his 62 prior offences.

The most recent victim admitted to police that she had communicated with Weaver “just out of fear.”

She added: “I am physically and mentally exhausted by this. When I first got with him I thought I could change his ways but obviously, that is not the case.”

Weaver had been under police bail conditions prohibiting him from contacting the woman, but he ignored them when he showed up at her house in August and told her he loved her.

She let him in, but he committed a terrifying series of offenses against her over the next few days.

His solicitor Lynda Rhead said in the previous sentencing: “The pre-sentence report says he is a risk to females. Jonathan knows that.

“The report is suggesting there may not be any remorse, but the best argument I can ever put forward to show remorse is guilty pleas. He straight away said to me: ‘I’m pleading guilty’.

“But he said more to me than that. He realises his cocaine addiction had gotten out of control. He realises he has got to stop taking drugs.”

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
