MOTHERHOOD: PARENTING STYLES AND THEIR IMPACTS ON THE CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT – Part 2

As we discussed in the previous episode, parenting style consists of several components that work together to create the emotional tone through which parents communicate their parenting policies and perceptions to their children.

Parenting styles reflect their attitudes toward discipline and parental responsibilities, as well as their expectations for their children. These are communicated to the children through body language, tone of voice, emotional displays, and the quality of attention given to them. Four parenting styles are identified by Researchers. They are based on the work of psychologist Diana Baumrind.

MOTHERHOOD: PARENTING STYLES AND THEIR IMPACTS ON THE CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT - Part 2

According to Baumrind’s theory, there is a close relationship between the type of parenting style and the behavior of children. Different parenting styles can result in different child development and outcomes
The Parenting styles are; Authoritative, Authoritarian Permissive, and Uninvolved or Neglectful Parenting Styles.

1) AUTHORITATIVE PARENTING STYLE
Authoritarian parenting is associated with high responsiveness and high demands. Authoritarian parents are sensitive to their children’s emotional needs while maintaining high expectations. They set boundaries and are very consistent in enforcing them.
Mothers who use this parenting style are
1) Disciplined, strict, but flexible.
2) Warm, sensitive, and nurturing.
3) Pay attention to the children.
4) Allow for autonomy while encouraging independence.
5) Reason with children.
6) Set firm boundaries for their children’s behavior.
7) Maintain consistent boundaries.
8) Use positive discipline rather than punitive or coercive measures.
9)    Earn children’s respect by their attitudes/disciplinary measures.
Children raised by authoritative mothers tend to be;
1) Be happy and content.
2) Are self-sufficient and independent.
3) Achieve great academic success and participate more in school activities.
4) Possess strong emotional regulation and self-control.
5) Show warmth and cooperation with peers
6) Good mental health.
7) Explore a new environment without being afraid.
8) Less Violent
9) Are competent and self-assured.

The second Parenting style will be covered next week, Watch out!
