NLC Suspends Protest, Extends Ultimatum To 13th March

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has suspended its statewide protest and extended its ultimatum to the federal government until March 13.

The workers union has declared a two-day nationwide protest over what it described as the federal government’s unmet demands, as well as the country’s current difficulties.

In a communique issued following the National Executive Council meeting this evening, Labour stated that the protest’s objectives were met on the first day of the demonstration.

Consequently, NEC-in-session resolved as follows: “to suspend street action for the second day of the Protest having achieved overwhelming success and thus attained the key objectives of the 2-day protest on the first day.”

Nigeria is experiencing economic hardship due to the withdrawal of the petrol subsidy, growing food inflation, currency instability, rising inflation, and high living expenses, which have sparked protests in several sections of the nation.

On Monday night, the NLC insisted that the demonstration would go ahead, so the presidency invited labour leaders to a last-minute meeting that resulted in deadlock.

The NLC then halted economic activity nationwide on Tuesday, citing hunger as the main cause of the protest rather than merely calling for a reassessment of the minimum wage, according to labour leader Joe Ajaero.

“You have to understand it. This protest is about hunger.

“What of those who are not working? The minimum wage, when will it be completed? When will it be implemented?

“What will be the minimum wage that will remove hunger?”

“However, Nationwide action continues tomorrow with simultaneous Press Conferences across all the states of the federation by the state Councils of the Congress including the National Headquarters.

“To reaffirm and extend the 7-day ultimatum by another 7 days which now expires on the 13th day of March 2024 within which the Government is expected to implement all the earlier agreement of the 2nd day of October 2023 and other demands presented in our letter during today’s nationwide protest.”

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
