Nnamdi Kanu’s Release: Malami Gives Only Condition That Will Permit The Release Of Igbo Leader

Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, said on Tuesday that President Muhammadu Buhari will consider the interests of Nigerians in the call to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Malami stated on NTA’s Good Morning Nigeria Show, where he said, “By way of general statements to the two issues presented: the issue relating to Nnamdi Kanu and by extension, IPOB, what I can tell you for certain is that the decision of the President is based fundamentally and at all times on public interest consideration.

“In the art of governance and what I have come to learn about the mind and heart of the President, Muhammadu Buhari, is to consider the 200 million as against the limited people.

“By extension, the issue of Kanu, what would as well govern the decision of the President in terms of whatever request is presented is the public interest as against the limited sectional interest of it.”

Some Igbo leaders have recently urged Buhari to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

During a meeting with Buhari at the State House in Abuja, the elders, led by the former Minister of Aviation in the First Republic, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, made their request.

The elders led by Amaechi had urged the president to release the IPOB leader unconditionally.

In June 2021, Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya and deported back to Nigeria, where he will face a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Biafran agitator has been detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) since his repatriation.

The IPOB leader is facing terrorism charges in a court presided over by Justice Binta Nyako.

However, the IPOB still carries out their operations in the absence of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, through the group’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, and sometimes the mind of their leader is being heard through his lawyers as he remains in the DSS custody.
