Tinubu Makes Fresh Appointments Into Upgraded Federal Institutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved key appointments into the governing councils and management of two newly upgraded Federal Universities of Education in Kano and Zaria.

In a statement on Wednesday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the appointments, stressing that they were in line with the administration’s commitment to strengthening higher education in Nigeria.

According to the announcement, Engineer Abdurrazaq Abubakar Nakore has been appointed as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano. Nakore, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, previously served as Executive Secretary of the Rural Electricity Board in Jigawa State.

President Tinubu also approved the appointment of Prof. Abdullahi Tukur Kodage as Vice Chancellor of the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.

Similarly, Prof. Yahaya Isa Bunkure has been named Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State. Bunkure, a renowned academic in science education, currently serves as the Vice Chancellor of Saadatu Rimi University of Education in Kano.

“These appointments reflect President Tinubu’s resolve to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector with capable leadership,” the statement read.

The two institutions — the Federal University of Education, Zaria, and the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano — were among four Colleges of Education upgraded to full-fledged universities between 2022 and 2023.

In line with the governing laws, the pro-chancellor will serve a four-year term, while the vice-chancellors will serve for five years.
