Tinubu Makes Historic Appointment: Professor Joash Amupitan Takes Helm at INEC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The National Council of State unanimously approved Amupitan’s nomination, describing him as a man of integrity. Amupitan succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose 10-year tenure ended in October 2025.

About Professor Amupitan

  • Background: Amupitan is a 58-year-old Professor of Law at the University of Jos, specializing in Company Law, Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance, and Privatisation Law.
  • Academic Credentials: He earned his LL.B., LL.M., and Ph.D. from the University of Jos and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2014.
  • Leadership Roles: Currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at Joseph Ayo Babalola University.

Amupitan’s appointment awaits Senate confirmation. If approved, he will lead INEC in organizing future elections, building on the foundation laid by his predecessor. Amupitan’s appointment marks a significant milestone as the first person from Kogi State to hold the position.
