Widespread Darkness In Nigeria As National Grid Collapses Again

The national power grid has collapsed again on Wednesday, the first time this month and the sixth time this year, 2022.

According to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, the system collapse happened at around 11:27 am.

The Disco reveal this on Twitter, saying, “Dear customers, we regret to inform you of a system collapse on the national grid at precisely 11:27 am today, Wednesday, July 20. We are in talks with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to ascertain the cause of the collapse and a possible restoration timeline.

“We will keep you updated on the situation.”

This will be the 6th time the national grid has collapsed this year following its last breakdown on June 13.

The collapse is anticipated to cut off electricity in several areas of Nigeria.

Nigeria’s power grid twice collapsed in March and twice more in April of this year due to the system’s fluctuating power generation as a result of several issues, including gas shortages, problems with water management, and gas pipeline vandalism, among others.

On April 8, 2022, the amount of electricity flowing through the grid dropped from over 3,000 MW to as little as 10 MW at around 9 pm

According to the report, the grid experienced a second collapse on April 9, 2022, when the country’s power system only produced 33 MW at around 1:00 a.m. after reaching a peak generation of 3,281.50 MW at 0:00 a.m.

Additionally, the national grid broke down twice in March, both times within the span of two days, which prompted the Federal Government to call a meeting of interested parties to discuss the problem.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
