11-Year-Old Shot By Police Officer After Calling 911

Pressure is mounting for an officer to be fired and punished following the shooting of an 11-year-old Mississippi, USA boy by the police after he dialled 911 for help.

According to Carlos Moore, a lawyer for the boy’s family, Aderrien Murry was gravely hurt early on Saturday, May 20, by an Indianola police officer responding to a domestic incident at the house of the 11-year-old boy’s mother.

“This should not have happened,” Moore said. “The main question [Aderrien] has been asking is why did this happen to me? The child suffered a collapsed lung, lacerated liver and fractured ribs.… He’s blessed to have survived but he’s still in pain emotionally and mentally.”

During a rally at Indianola City Hall on May 25, a group of protesters demanded justice for the shooting of the defenceless child.

The gunshot that occurred at 6 a.m. on Saturday at a residence on BB King Road is being looked into, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

“No officers were injured during the incident. A minor occupant of the residence received significant injuries and has been transported to a local hospital,” the agency said.

“MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.”

Following a unanimous council vote, the officer, Greg Capers, has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The boy’s family’s attorney stated that he was attempting to collect body-camera footage of the shooting.

Moore stated that the child was shot after seeking assistance for his mother. During a fight with the father of one of her children, Nakala Murry gave the youngster her phone and urged him to call the police and his grandma, according to the family’s attorney.

Moore claimed that when police came, they were told that the man was unarmed and had fled through a back door and that three children were there.

According to Moore, the police told everyone inside the home to show themselves by raising their hands. The 11-year-old was fired after he stepped out of a bedroom with his hands raised, according to the lawyer.

“He shot him immediately when his hands were up, and he’s coming around the corner,” Moore said.

The cop, according to Moore, should be fired and charged with aggravated assault.

“I didn’t ask for a suspension with pay. I asked and demanded termination. Did I stutter?” he said at a City Hall news conference Thursday. “When I say termination, I mean termination. You don’t give someone a paid vacation who committed such a reckless act.”

He predicted that the family will bring a federal civil rights claim.

“We need to hold our law enforcement officers to a higher standard and ensure that they are trained to de-escalate situations and use non-lethal methods whenever possible,” Moore said in a statement Thursday.
