55-Year-Old Man Arrested For Alleged Theft Of Materials Worth Over 500,000 Naira

Ayeni Olusegun, 55, was arrested and charged with theft before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Olusegun, whose residence was not provided, is charged with three counts of theft.

The prosecutor, Insp Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant committed the crime at 4 a.m. on Nov. 29 in the Ilokun Village area of Iworoko, Ekiti.

Okunade claimed that the defendant took N80,000 worth of working tools from one Mr. Olaegbon Oladimeji, including cutlasses and a spray pump.

He further claimed that the defendant took N450,000 worth of electrical wires, control panels, and plugs from one Akinleye Ojo.

Okunade stated that the defendant attempted to commit felony by stealing from one Akinrinade Rasheed and Akinrinade Sola on the same date at 5.05 a.m. at Ilokun area, Iworoko-Ekiti.

The offenses, he claims, are in violation of Sections 390(9) and 509 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti, 2012.

Okunade requested an adjournment from the court so that he could review the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant, on the other hand, has entered a not guilty plea to the charge.

In a similar development, the defendant, Ayeni Olusegun, committed another offense in Iworoko-Ekiti on November 7 at 6 a.m.

Insp Okunade, the prosecutor, told the court that the defendant broke into Isiaka Hadi’s shop.

He further claimed that the defendant took a generator worth N120,000, an industrial machine worth N170,000, ten yards of garments worth N8,000, and two T-shirts for N16,000 from the complainant.

The offenses, according to the prosecutor, were in violation of Sections 413(1) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti, 2012.

The defendant pled not guilty, and his lawyer, Mr. Emmanuel Sumonu, persuaded the court to give bail to his client, promising that he would not bailout.

Mr. Abdulhamid Lawal, the Chief Magistrate, gave the defendant bail in the amount of N100,000 with one surety in the same amount.

The case was postponed until Feb. 7 for a hearing.
