Amazon Alexa Instructs 10yr-old Child To Electrocute Themselves For A ‘Challenge’

Embracing technology isn’t always easy. From new apps to updates, to voice search – to the next big craze!   A woman has narrated how Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant instructed her 10-year-old child to electrocute himself as part of a “challenge,” after the child simply asked for a new challenge.

Kristin Livdahl posted on Twitter that the voice assistant recommended action after her daughter asked for a challenge.

“Here’s something I found on the web”, replied Amazon, “the challenge is simple: plug a phone charger about halfway into a wall outlet, then touch the progs exposed to a penny. “

Ms. Livdahl said she and her daughter were having some “physical challenges” and that her daughter wanted another.

“I was right there and shouted, No, Alexa, no!” Like it was a dog. My daughter says she is too smart to do something like this”, she tweeted.

Amazon says it has now removed the challenge from its database.

“Customer trust is at the heart of everything we do and Alexa is designed to provide customers with accurate, relevant, and useful information,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “As soon as we became aware of this error, we took prompt action to correct it.”

Voice assistants like Google, Siri, and Alexa get their information from common search engines, but can’t check the information effectively – and thus can provide false or objectionable results.

In December 2020, Alexa was found repeating conspiracy and racist comments. When asked if Islam is bad, a result returned by Alexa was: “Here’s something I found on the web. According to [a website]Islam is an evil religion.”

In 2018, Apple’s Siri voice assistant thought Donald Trump was a penis because someone broke into the current president’s Wikipedia page and Siri pulled information from there.

Isn’t this crazy…😃

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
