The remains of a missing woman were found decapitated and placed inside a suitcase near an abandoned farmhouse in the Tuscan town of Montecatini Terme, approximately 25 miles west of Florence, Italy.
Maria Denisa Paun, 30, a Romanian citizen, had been missing since May 15 after disappearing from her residence in Prato, Tuscany. Her gruesome remains were discovered nearly three weeks later.
Authorities report that a local security guard, Vasile Frumuzache, 32 — also a Romanian citizen — admitted to the killing. He allegedly confessed to strangling Paun, decapitating her with a knife, and burning her head with gasoline before hiding her body in a garbage bag and suitcase.
Frumuzache informed investigators that he had met Paun, who was employed as an escort, via a dating app. According to reports, after meeting at a hotel, she threatened to disclose their encounter to his wife unless he paid her approximately $11,450.
“She was blackmailing me, that’s why I killed her,” he reportedly told police. “When I told her that I was married, she said she could reach my wife.”
Hotel surveillance footage shows Frumuzache arriving around 10:50 p.m. on May 15 with a black bag. Just after 1 a.m., he is seen departing with a white suitcase owned by Paun, which he placed into his Volkswagen Golf. Paun’s remains were later found inside that same suitcase.
Investigators utilized GPS data from a device installed in Frumuzache’s car by his insurance provider to trace his movements. This data guided them to the isolated farmhouse where Paun’s body was recovered.
The killing has stunned the residents of Tuscany and attracted national attention amid speculation that Paun might have been kidnapped by organized criminals. The discovery of her remains has now brought the mystery to a tragic conclusion.
