Protests Erupt After Ice Officer Fatally Shoots Woman During Immigration Crackdown

Tensions soared in Minneapolis on Wednesday when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a female motorist amid the Trump administration’s latest crackdown on immigration in a major U.S. city.

Officials from the federal agency claimed that the shooting was an act of self-defense, but Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey quickly rebuffed that narrative, labeling the incident as “reckless” and “unnecessary.”

The tragedy unfolded in a residential neighborhood just south of downtown Minneapolis, mere blocks away from long-standing immigrant markets and only a mile from the site where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, speaking during a visit to Texas, called the incident “an act of domestic terrorism,” alleging that the woman had attempted to ram the officers with her vehicle. “An officer acted quickly and defensively to protect himself and the people around him,” she asserted.

However, Mayor Frey criticized the federal government’s approach, expressing outrage at the deployment of over 2,000 officers as part of this immigration enforcement initiative in the Twin Cities. “They are not here to provide safety in our city,” he argued. “What they are doing is creating chaos and eroding trust.” Frey urged federal agents to exit the city to stop the destruction of families and the violence that had now reached deadly levels.

“Already, they’re trying to spin this as self-defense. I’ve seen the video, and I can say unequivocally, that is absolute nonsense,” he declared.

This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing series of immigration enforcement operations under the Trump administration, with the woman being at least the fifth person to lose their life in these confrontations since 2024.

The atmosphere in the Twin Cities has been tense since the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the operation just a day prior, involving an unprecedented number of agents, partially fueled by claims of fraud among Somali residents.

As news of the shooting spread, a large crowd of protesters gathered at the scene, voicing their frustration at both local and federal officers present, including Gregory Bovino, a senior U.S. Customs and Border Protection official known for overseeing crackdowns in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago.

The scene mirrored previous protests in larger cities; hecklers targeted the officers while whistles—symbols of resistance during these operations—filled the air.

During her Texas trip, Secretary Noem confirmed that DHS has already deployed more than 2,000 officers to the Twin Cities, resulting in “hundreds and hundreds” of arrests. The escalating situation has left many in the community reeling and seeking answers.
