Nigerian politician Peter Obi, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt as gunmen targeted Obidient Movement members in Edo State.
Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, raised a grave alarm on Tuesday regarding a violent incident involving former presidential candidate Peter Obi and his supporters in Benin City, Edo State. The attack occurred during the formal defection ceremony of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement entitled “Breaking Red Alert in Benin, Edo State,” Tanko detailed the harrowing events: “Peter Obi and the leadership of the ADC were subjected to a siege and attack in Benin City. Armed individuals followed our convoy from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, where a gathering was underway.”
According to Tanko, the gunmen opened fire at the gate of the residence and damaged several vehicles parked nearby, suggesting a targeted assassination attempt on their lives. “This assault not only endangers our lives but also raises serious concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria,” he emphasized, calling on authorities to recognize the escalating violence and protect the sanctity of democratic processes.
