The remaining 12 missionaries who were taken prisoner in Haiti have narrated how they planned their escape from their captors den.
Officials from Christian aid ministries outlined this daring plot during a news conference on Monday.
CAM spokesman Weston Showalter said the missionaries were “nudged” by God in an attempt to escape. Despite the threat, the group bandied together and put their plans in God’s hands, he said.
The 12 missionaries prepared by wearing their shoes and filling their clothes with water. They found a way out of the room in which they were kept despite the locked door. With the guards around, the group quickly got out and headed towards a mountain which they had seen from afar.
After walking through the bushes and huts for hours and as it dawned, the group met a man who helped them out for help.
During the press conference, CAM shared photographs of 17 missionaries who were taken by members of the 400 Mawzo gang, shortly after visiting an orphanage on 16 October.
The gang had demanded $17 million for the safe return of the hostages. On 21 November, two of the 17 hostages were released.
Two weeks later on 5 December, three more hostages were released, the last of the 12 hostages being freed on 16 December, two months after the kidnapping.
In the pictures, the group comprising 12 adults and five children can be seen smiling. A father, who was not kidnapped, joined his family members, who were part of the kidnapped group, for the photo.
In other pictures, a smiling 10-month-old girl and a 3-year-old boy are reading a book.
Showalter said the children appeared to have been well taken care of by their captors.

He spent some time with the group over the weekend, saying that it was nice to see the kids playing and reading books despite their exams.
The group remained strong and depended on each other to keep their spirits up, singing and praying.
“They are very flexible,” he said. “He went through a lot. It hasn’t been easy.”
He said that his faith and the prayers of his loved bucks and people around the world made him go through this ordeal.
