Ilegal Drugs Usage: NDLEA Calls On Parent To Monitor Their Children’s Activities

The Enugu State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has encouraged parents to constantly watch their children’s activities in order to stem the tide of illicit drug addiction in the society.

Mr Adjai Eyiuche, NDLEA’s Assistant State Commander, Drug Demand Reduction Department, stated this on Mothering Sunday at St. Mulumba Catholic Church in Enugu.

During the advocacy visit, Eyiuche addressed the worshippers, explaining that the appeal was in response to the increasing rate of drug consumption and production among young people in the state.

Crystal meth, also known as ‘mkpuru mmiri’ in Igbo, is the most commonly overused illicit substance in the state, according to him.

He said, “We are here to address you because of the ravaging effects of crystal meth which is destroying our youths and families.”

He stated that the church plays a unique role in the fight against drugs and that the agency’s objective is for a drug-free society.

Mr Anietie Bassey, the State Commander of the NDLEA, also stated that the magnitude of illegal drug and substance misuse in the state necessitated expanding their scope of awareness.

According to Bassey, the command has previously focused its sensitization and lobbying efforts on the state’s urban areas.

He said, “It is now very important to take the sensitisation to rural areas and the suburbs because the manufacturing and abuse of illicit drugs are endemic there.

“These illicit drugs and substances are produced in clandestine laboratories and we are getting intelligence.”

Mr Bassey stated that such laboratories were destroyed as soon as they were discovered.

He urged citizens of the state to provide intelligence that would help the command locate and destroy such secret laboratories, as well as apprehend their operators.

Mrs Callista Mmeka, the command’s Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Media, and Advocacy, was honoured by the Catholic Women Organization with the title of ‘Friend of Mary’ during the gathering, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
