In a development that has shocked the mixed martial arts community, iconic fighter Jon Jones has formally declared his retirement from the UFC, concluding one of the most illustrious careers in heavyweight MMA history.
The heavyweight championship has now been awarded to interim champion Tom Aspinall.
The announcement came on Saturday, June 21, during a press conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, where UFC President Dana White revealed that Jones reached out to UFC officials late Friday night to communicate his decision to retire from the sport after a two-year tenure as heavyweight champion.
Jones, aged 37, had earlier expressed hesitation about defending his title against Aspinall, fueling increasing speculation about his future. That speculation was put to rest when Jones posted a comprehensive statement on his official X account, confirming his retirement.
“Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC,” Jones wrote. “This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years.”
Jones reflected on career highlights, including becoming the youngest UFC champion in history and defending his title against elite competitors. He also recognized the peaks and valleys of his journey, expressing gratitude to the UFC, fans, teammates, and fellow fighters for their contributions to his career.
“I’ve faced incredible highs and some tough lows, but every challenge has taught me something valuable and made me stronger,” he said. “MMA will always be a part of who I am… The best is yet to come.”
Jones concludes his career with an impressive professional record of 28 wins, 1 loss, and 1 no contest. He claimed the vacant UFC heavyweight title in March 2023 and last defended it against Stipe Miocic in November of that year.
Meanwhile, Aspinall, who has held the interim belt for 18 months, has now been named the undisputed heavyweight champion. Although fans and analysts had long awaited a unification bout between the two fighters, persistent delays and Jones’ absence had already led to calls for the UFC to strip him of the title.
The decision signals the close of a chapter for the UFC and charts a new path for the heavyweight division under Aspinall’s leadership.
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
