Russia’s G20 Position Threatened Considering Ukraine Invasion

According to Reuters, which cited sources, the US and other Western nations are considering excluding Russia from the G20.

The G20 is a group of the world’s 20 most powerful economies that aims to coordinate action on global economic challenges such as climate change and development.

According to Reuters on March 23, Poland proposed to US authorities on Tuesday that it replace Russia in the group, and they received a “positive response”

This would be in addition to the West’s existing economic penalties against Russia, which include trade embargoes, the seizure of Russian oligarchs’ assets, and the sanctioning of Russian politicians, including President Vladimir Putin, for his invasion of Ukraine.

The proposal to expel Russia from the G20 may still fail because it will almost certainly be opposed by other significant G20 countries such as China, India, and Saudi Arabia.

Experts predict that as a result of the possibility of vetoes, the G7 Western allies, which include France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, and Germany, will boycott G20 meetings this year.

On Tuesday, when asked about it, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan responded: “We believe it cannot be business as usual for Russia in international institutions and in the international community.”

Russia was also a member of the G7, which was stretched to the G8 in the 2000s until it was thrown out in 2014 after invading Crimea.
