Daniel 7:9-10,13-14 Psalm 137(138):1-5 John 1:47-51
In the vibrant tapestry of the Catholic faith, we encounter the amazing hierarchy of nine choirs of angels, each one more awe-inspiring than the last: starting from the humble Angels, rising through the mighty Archangels, and soaring to the regal heights of Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Dominions, Thrones, Cherubim, and finally, the blazing Seraphim!
Within the Church, we come together to celebrate the powerful archangels: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, whose remarkable stories echo through the Old and New Testaments. Michael, whose name resonates with strength—“Who is like God?”—stands as our protector, ready to shield us with his might. We look to him in powerful prayers, calling upon St. Michael for divine protection. His epic battles against evil in the Book of Revelation are legendary!
Then there’s Gabriel, the archangel of messages and enlightenment! With his name meaning, “God is My Strength,” he is the bearer of good news, famously announcing to Mary that she would bear the Son of God. He’s not just any messenger; he’s the Archangel of Wisdom, Revelation, Prophecy, and Visions—a pivotal figure in the unfolding of our salvation story.
And let’s not forget Raphael, whose name means “Healing Power of God.” Found in the enchanting book of Tobit, Raphael is a compassionate companion and guide, sent to heal Tobit’s blindness and respond to heartfelt prayers. Imagine the joy of his presence as he brings healing and hope!
In today’s Gospel reading from John, we see Nathanael making a thrilling discovery—he races to find out if Philip’s claims about Jesus are true. What a revelation it is when he declares Jesus the “Son of God”! Jesus’ reply echoes the visions of Jacob’s ladder: “You will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” This foreshadows the miraculous events awaiting Christ’s Resurrection!
Visualizing this scene ignites my imagination—Heaven must be a whirlwind of activity! During the Triduum, I found myself marveling at what the angels were experiencing as Christ journeyed through His Passion, death, and Resurrection. I can almost see Michael, poised and ready with a legion of angels, awaiting the divine command, Gabriel watching over with bittersweet sadness, and Raphael longing to heal the shattered hearts. And then—what absolute joy must have radiated through Heaven with Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension! These celestial beings surely understood God’s magnificent plan and offered their unwavering support on that glorious day of Resurrection and Ascension. What an extraordinary moment in heavenly history!
