Saints Philip and James, Apostles – Feast

1 Corinthians 15:1-8
Ps. 18(19): 2-5
John 15:6-14

May 3rd is a day of celebration as we honor the incredible lives of Sts. Philip and James! While there isn’t a dramatic backstory to their combined feast day, these two apostles were nothing short of extraordinary, living lives fiercely dedicated to the Gospel and ultimately sacrificing everything for their unwavering faith.

In the sixth century, something truly remarkable happened: the bodies of Sts. Philip and James were transported from the East to Rome and laid to rest in the majestic Basilica of the Holy Apostles. This momentous arrival together sparked the Church to establish a joint feast day, forever linking these two stalwarts of faith.

Let’s dive into who they were! James, the Son of Alphaeus, is shrouded in mystery. Beyond his name, we know he was handpicked by Jesus to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel—what an honor! He’s not to be confused with the other well-known James, the one from Acts but rather stands out as James the Lesser.

Now, let’s talk about St. Philip! He was among the very first apostles called by Christ, and he’s not to be confused with Philip the Evangelist. On the day after Jesus called Peter and Andrew, He spotted Philip in Galilee and changed his life forever. Unlike St. James the Less, who remained a virgin, Philip was a married man and a proud father of several daughters when he received his calling. The moment Philip encountered Christ, he believed wholeheartedly! His faith ignited a passion in him that drove him to invite others to join the fellowship of Christ. When Nathanael hesitated at the idea of anything good coming from Nazareth, Philip shot back with a powerful line that still resonates today: “Come and see!” (Jn 1:46). This highlights the essence of faith—that to truly believe in the Messiah, one must have a personal encounter with Him!

Though the apostles faced unimaginable trials and persecution, they placed their unwavering trust in God and now bask in the glory of heaven. They inspire us to do the same: to hold our confidence in God high, especially in times of adversity. Remember, in our Father’s house, there are many mansions. If we follow the path laid out by Christ, He will come to us at the end of our lives and welcome us home.

Never forget, it is the grace of God, coupled with your hard work and determination, that leads to real success!

Wishing you an amazing day filled with inspiration and joy!
Shalom!
