Senator Ekweremadu’s Daughter Denies Trafficking Allegations Laid Against Her

Sonia Ekweremadu, 25, the daughter of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has refuted allegations that she brought a homeless man into the UK to have his kidney harvested.

Sonia, who is charged along with her mother Beatrice Ekweremadu, 56, father Ike Ekweremadu, 60, and Nigerian doctor Obinna Obeta, 50, pleaded not guilty today, January 13.

Ike, Beatrice, and Obeta had also refuted allegations at the Old Bailey on December 20, of conspiring to set up another person’s travel in order to take advantage of him.

British prosecutors allege that they conspired with others, including a family member living in Nigeria by the name of Isaac Ekweremadu, in order to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old man to remove one of his kidneys for Sonia, who has a kidney-related disease.

The young man claimed he was a victim of trafficking at the Staines police station, which lead to the arrest of Ike and Beatrice Ekweremadu.

He claimed that he never agreed to the tests being done on him and that he was treated like a slave once he arrived in the UK.

The alleged victim also claimed that he ran away from the residence where he was being held and lived on the streets for three days before calling the police.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the Ekweremadus intended to have David’s kidney removed so they could transplant it to their daughter.

The prosecuting attorney said, “The case began on 5 May 2022 when the complainant presented himself at Staines Police Station and claimed he had been transported to this country for the purpose of his kidney being removed.

“He arrived on 20th February 2022 and was taken to Royal Free Hospital where tests were conducted. For the purpose he was there he did not consent to the taking of his kidney.

“He returned to the house he was staying and his treatment changed dramatically. He described being treated effectively as a slave.”

The trial will get underway at the Old Bailey before Justice Adam Johnson of the High Court on January 31.
