The Most Influential Person On AIB This Week Is Regina Honu

Regina Honu (née Agyare) is a Ghanaian social entrepreneur, software developer, and the founder of Soronko Solutions, a Ghanaian software development firm. She completed her secondary school at Holy Child High School in Cape Coast, and she graduated from Ashesi University in 2005.

She once made it to the last stage of Microsoft’s interview process. But she turned it down for the sake of her nation, Ghana.

Regina left her work as an IT specialist in a bank several years after graduating from Ashesi University to start Soronko Solutions, a software company focused on developing software solutions to help local SMEs.

Honu founded Soronko Foundation in 2012, which eventually evolved into Soronko Academy in 2017 to educate kids and young people in coding, IT skills, and human-centered in Ghana, West Africa. The academy was established to help young people, particularly women, succeed in society by providing them with the technical and soft skills they require, as well as to close the technological gender gap. Regina Honu started the Tech Needs Females Ghana campaign to encourage more Ghanaian girls to seek jobs in technology. As part of the effort, girls are taught to code. The Academy is West Africa’s first coding and human-centered design school for kids and teenage girls. It was founded with the purpose of teaching girls in underprivileged areas how to code.

Honu founded the Tech Needs Girls Ghana campaign, which aims to teach and educate more Ghanaian girls to pursue technology-related studies. The initiative is known for teaching girls how to code. The Academy and in collaboration with the Tech Needs Girls program, has trained over 3,500 girls in Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Regina Honu collaborated with Autism Ambassadors of Ghana for an Autism awareness session as part of World Autism Day 2018. The event raised awareness of autism and launched the Autism Aid App, which allows families of children with autism to obtain information from specialists on how to care for these children.

She has won many awards for her great contributions to technology in Africa. Among them are:

❖ She is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers community and a Mandela Washington Fellow of the Young African Leaders Initiative.
❖ She was named one of Coca-Cola’s 60 Young Achievers for his exceptional performance in Technology and was also given the Big Six award by Coca-Cola Ghana for her outstanding contribution to technology.
❖ In the 2016 Ghana StartUp Awards, she was named Startup Entrepreneur of the Year, and her firm was named Social Enterprise Startup of the Year.
❖ She was also named the JCI Ghana Outstanding Young Person for her contributions to scientific and technological growth.
❖ Her group was nominated for the Women in IT Editor’s Choice Award in the United Kingdom.
❖ She was a finalist for ITU’s African Digital Woman of the Year award.
❖ She received the Women of Courage Award for Technology, etc

Regina got married in November 2015 to a South African, Richard, and they both have a daughter.
