THROUGH OBEDIENCE IN THE LORD WE CAN BE FULFILLED
In today’s Gospel, the passage from Isaiah regarding the Messiah and His mission is explicitly claimed by Christ during His reading in the synagogue of His hometown. This act of identification not only aligns Him with the Old Testament prophecy but underscores the divine nature of His mission. Jesus emphasizes dependence on divine authority, stating, “My food is to do the will of my Father.” With this in mind, one must question: if we are commissioned by God, why do we harbor concerns about the fulfillment of that mission?
During this season, it’s common to feel overwhelmed by the numerous, often conflicting demands on our time and focus. A recurring introspective inquiry arises: “Am I adequately fulfilling my responsibilities? Am I engaging with others in the manner that Christ exemplified?” The resolution of any mission ultimately rests in the sovereignty of God, and our role is to align ourselves with His will completely.
From a societal perspective, we must consider how the message of Jesus’ Epiphany and mission informs our actions in the current year. Are the public policies we endorse designed to dismantle barriers to inclusion both domestically and globally? Do we feel compelled to act upon the injustices faced by those labeled as “Other”? With the mandate of Christ’s mission entrusted to us through our baptism, are we attuned to the voices of those marginalized in society, particularly the impoverished and oppressed?
The first reading today reminds us that a genuine love for God necessitates a parallel love for our fellow human beings. It is imperative that we allow God’s salvation to flow through us to others. May His transformative grace purify us and render our sacrifices both acceptable and commendable. As we embark on this new year, may we consistently pursue the Light of Christ and embody His Mission in all our endeavors, regardless of the contexts we encounter. Amen.
