Today’s first reading takes us on an exhilarating journey through one of the most stunning displays of God’s mercy in the Old Testament! It begins back in Genesis, where God reveals to Abraham that Sodom and its inhabitants face impending destruction due to their wicked ways. But here’s where it gets thrilling—Abraham boldly negotiates with God! He pleads for the city, lowering the bar to save it if just 50 good people can be found. And when that fails, he keeps going, all the way down to 10! Ultimately, God agrees to rescue Lot and his family, showcasing His incredible mercy.
In today’s reading, two angels rush to deliver a crucial message to Lot: escape Sodom before it meets its fate! But wait—Lot hesitates, caught in the comfort of his surroundings. So, the angels take matters into their own hands, literally guiding Lot and his family to safety. What a gripping demonstration of a listening, forgiving God!
This story resonates with the extraordinary mercy we experience today. Unlike human mercy, which can often be conditional and limited, God’s mercy is boundless, unconditional, and freely given! Think about it: God listened patiently to Abraham and made a way for Lot, despite his wavering moments. When our loved ones face illness, tragedy, or hardship, we send up our prayers. But do we extend that same compassion to the victims of war, poverty, discrimination, and mental health struggles? Do we truly believe that God hears our cries?
No exception was made for Lot when God announced the destruction of Sodom. It’s easy to imagine that Lot, despite the city’s corruption, found comfort in his familiar surroundings. Yet, even with his delays, God forgave him! No matter our missteps—big or small—God’s mercy is always within reach. Are we ready to respond to this incredible gift by striving to be better?
In today’s Gospel, Jesus boldly tells His disciples: do not be afraid! We are summoned to reflect God’s mercy in our lives, challenged to show forgiveness, compassion, and love to others. By embracing this divine calling, we not only honor God but also help create a world that is more just and humane!
“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
