Vladimir Putin Writes Ghana On It’s 65th Independence Anniversary

Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin wrote to Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, congratulating him on the country’s independence anniversary celebration.

This comes as the country celebrates the 65th anniversary of its independence from British colonial powers on Sunday.

For the first time, the national tournament is being hosted in the Central Region, at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

In the midst of Russia’s current military attack against Ukraine, Putin wrote to Akufo-Addo.

President Putin wrote, “Please accept my sincere congratulations on the occasion of the National Holiday of the Republic of Ghana – the Independence Day!

“The relations between Russia and Ghana are traditionally of a friendly nature. I am convinced that further development of a constructive bilateral dialogue and partnership meets the interests of our peoples, contributing to the peace and security on the African continent.

“I wish you good health and every success, as well as happiness and prosperity to all your compatriots.”

Nevertheless, Ghana was one of several African countries to vote at the United Nations Security Council to denounce Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Albania and the US have submitted a proposal to the United Nations Security Council to put a halt to Russia’s military action against Ukraine.

The Council had produced a resolution calling for Russian forces to cease using force and withdraw their soldiers from Ukrainian territory. The document also called for the recognition of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions to be revoked.

Refusing to be cornered by the council, the Russian Federation vetoed the proposal, which had previously received backing from 11 countries, with China, India, and the United Arab Emirates declining to vote.

Ghana, Kenya, and Gabon, all members of the UN Security Council’s 15-member body, voted in favor of the draft, which would have recognized Russia’s invasion as a violation of Article 2, paragraph 4 of the UN Charter if Russia had not used its veto authority.
