300-Level Student Committee Suicide In Akure

Oluwapelumi Joseph Olona, a 300-level student at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State, reportedly committed suicide.

The Department of Industrial Design 300-level student hung himself with buckets in his room at an off-campus hostel in the Aule area of Akure metropolis.

His body was discovered when his close pals forced his room door open in the early hours of Saturday, January 21, 2023.

According to sources, his pals got concerned when he did not answer his phone calls and did not open his door after continuous knockings.

“Upon gaining entry, his body was discovered hanging with the buckets used to aid his legs.” the source said.

While the exact reason for his actions was still unknown, students in the area where he resided suggested that it might have something to do with his struggles with depression and money problems.

Some of his roommates recalled the deceased, who was known to his friends as “Black,” as a cheerful student who never got into disagreements or fights with anyone.

The incident was confirmed in a statement by Jesunifemi Asoore, president of the students’ union at the college, FUTASU.

He said, “I know we are all saddened by his death, and we’re sending our condolences to his family and friends. Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions, which might include shock, sadness and confusion. We want to assure you that we, the Students Union Government, care about you and the feelings that you may be experiencing.”

State Police Command spokesperson Funmi Odunlami also confirmed the deceased in a statement on Saturday, January 21.

“His body had been taken to the morgue, and investigation has started to unravel the reasons behind his action, but it was a case of suicide,” the PPRO said.
