Nigerian football is in mourning after former Southampton and Royal Antwerp forward Victor Udoh died at the age of 21 in Abuja. Reports describe the circumstances of his death as “suspicious,” though the exact cause has not been confirmed by authorities.
Udoh had recently returned to Nigeria following the end of his stint with Czech club Dynamo České Budějovice, which he joined after leaving Southampton in 2025. According to reports, he was found dead in the capital, and further details are still awaited.
The forward’s journey to Europe began in Abuja, where he caught the attention of Royal Antwerp as a teenager. He rose through the Belgian club’s youth ranks, scoring 12 goals in 21 matches for the Young Reds and making his senior debut at 19. In total, he made 28 appearances for Antwerp before moving to England.
Southampton signed Udoh on a three-and-a-half-year deal in January 2025, but he featured mainly for the development side, scoring twice in eight games. He left the Premier League club by mutual consent later that year in search of regular playing time.
