The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested a Mexican national and 4 other suspects, recovering illicit drugs worth billions of naira from a forest hideout in Oyo State.
The operation was carried out by NDLEA operatives after weeks of intelligence gathering on transnational drug trafficking networks using Nigeria’s forests as transit and storage points.
According to NDLEA, the team stormed the forest camp in Oyo after tracking suspicious movement and logistics linked to an international cartel. The Mexican suspect, believed to be a coordinator for the syndicate, was arrested alongside 4 Nigerian accomplices who allegedly handled local operations, security, and distribution.
During the raid, operatives recovered large quantities of illicit substances. NDLEA described the haul as “multi-billion-naira worth” and said the drugs were packaged for both local distribution and export. The exact types and weights are being finalized at the agency’s lab, but officials confirm the cache included high-grade narcotics typically smuggled across borders.
*Why this matters*
1. *Cartel link*: The arrest of a Mexican national signals a direct connection to international drug cartels. NDLEA says Nigeria is increasingly being used as a transit point by South American cartels moving drugs to Europe, Asia, and within Africa.
2. *Forest camps*: Oyo and other South-West forests have become hotspots for illegal drug cultivation and storage due to difficult terrain. The agency has intensified raids this year to dismantle them.
3. *Street value*: “Multi-billion-naira” seizures disrupt supply chains, reduce availability on Nigerian streets, and cut off revenue for criminal networks.
The Chairman/CEO of NDLEA stated that the arrest proves that no foreign trafficker or local collaborator is above the law. He warned that forests, farms, and border communities will remain under surveillance.
“Whether you’re a Mexican cartel operative or a local facilitator, our message is the same: Oyo forests are no longer safe for your business. We will keep coming until we dismantle every camp,” he stated.
The 5 suspects are in custody and will be charged in court after investigations. NDLEA says it’s working with international partners to trace the cartel’s financial flows and other members.
This bust does 2 things: it takes billions of naira worth of drugs off the street, and it sends a signal to foreign cartels that Nigeria’s forests are now a risk zone. For Oyo residents, it means one less criminal camp in their backyard.
