A Lagos-based security operative, Adebanjo Samuel, is being celebrated for honesty after returning $9,100 a customer had misplaced at a First City Monument Bank branch in Marina, Lagos. The money, equivalent to over ₦15 million, was left behind by the customer during a transaction. Adebanjo spotted it while on duty, secured it immediately, and handed it over to bank management to locate the owner. The customer was later contacted and reunited with the cash.
Bank officials and customers at the branch praised Adebanjo’s action, calling it rare in a time when stories of lost valuables rarely end well. FCMB management commended him for upholding the bank’s values of integrity and customer trust. They said his conduct protected the bank’s reputation and reinforced confidence among customers who walk into the Marina branch daily. Management also presented him with a reward and commendation letter for setting an example that other staff can follow.
The story spread quickly on social media after witnesses shared details of what happened. Nigerians flooded the comments with praise, saying Adebanjo restored faith in humanity. Many noted that resisting $9,100 is not easy in Nigeria’s current economy, where millions struggle with daily expenses. For many, his decision proved that integrity still exists among ordinary workers who keep the country running behind the scenes.
Adebanjo, who works with a private security firm posted to the bank, said he never considered keeping the money. In a short interview, he explained that his job is to protect lives and property, and that includes protecting customers’ belongings. He said he was raised to do what is right, even when no one is watching. His colleagues described him as diligent and disciplined, adding that his actions were in line with the training they received.
The commendation comes at a time when discussions about ethics and trust in public spaces are high. Security operatives, bank staff, and everyday citizens have shared the story as a reminder that small acts of honesty matter. For FCMB and the customer, Adebanjo’s choice turned a painful loss into a story of hope. For Nigeria, it’s proof that one person’s integrity can still inspire thousands.
