In remembrance of the victims of terrorist attacks and other acts of violence throughout the nation, the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN, has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, to be a national “Black Sunday.”
A three-day national prayer program, set for June 12–14, was also announced by the association.
Speaking following the National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, emphasized that prayers would not be sufficient to address Nigeria’s escalating security issues.
He said urgent and practical measures are needed to address the crisis and restore safety across the nation.
Okoh called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, describing the situation as critical and requiring immediate intervention.
The escalating insecurity across the region is becoming increasingly unmanageable, with crime rates surging and safety concerns mounting among residents. Despite efforts by authorities to restore peace, the situation continues to deteriorate, leaving communities vulnerable and distressed.
If urgent and effective measures are not implemented, the situation risks spiraling further out of control, threatening the stability and well-being of all those affected.
