Final Whistle for a Football Patriarch: Nigeria Mourns Ex-NFF Boss Ibrahim Galadima

Nigerian football was thrown into mourning following the death of former Nigeria Football Association chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, a towering figure whose influence shaped the game for decades. The Kano-born administrator and founder of Kano Pillars Football Club passed away, drawing tributes from across the sporting and political landscape.

Galadima led the then NFA at a pivotal period and was widely credited with institutional reforms and grassroots advocacy. He chaired the 16-man committee that drafted Nigeria’s 10-Year Football Masterplan, approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, which sought to revive school sports, local leagues, and youth development. Vice chairman of that committee, Yemi Idowu, described him as central to the push for “a new ideology and culture” in Nigerian football.

Beyond administration, Galadima was revered as a mentor and talent spotter. His Kano home became a hub for players, coaches, referees, and journalists, and he was instrumental in the rise of stars like Ahmed Musa, Baba Otu Mohammed, and Ahmed Garba. NFF board member Rabiu Inuwa Ahlan said Galadima’s death was “a huge loss to the Nigerian football family,” noting that he mentored a vast number of football stakeholders from Kano and beyond.

Galadima was also remembered for his blunt candor. His remark that “the World Cup is not Nigeria’s birthright” after the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for Germany 2006 resurfaced often, a reminder of his insistence that success must be earned through planning and hard work, not assumption. Colleagues said that principle guided his years in football, from NFA/NFF leadership to founding Kano Pillars.

Tributes poured in from the NFF, former federation presidents like Aminu Maigari who visited him during his recent illness, NSC chairman Shehu Dikko, and clubs he helped build. As flags fly at half-mast at the Sunday Dankaro House, Nigerian football bids farewell to a man many called its “institutional memory” — a bridge between eras, gone but stitched into the game’s fabric.
