Antoine Griezmann, the France forward, has declared his retirement from international football at the age of 33.
The 33-year-old Atletico Madrid player made 137 appearances for his country, scoring 44 goals, and helped France win the 2018 World Cup, striking a penalty in the final to defeat Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.
He also won the 2021 Nations League with his country.
“It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life,” Griezmann posted. “Thank you for this magnificent, tricolor adventure and see you soon.”
“Today, with profound emotion, I announce my retirement as a France national team player,” he said. “After ten incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it’s time for me to turn the page and make room for the new generation.”
“Wearing this shirt has been an honor and a privilege,” he continued. “I leave the France national team with a sense of pride and gratitude. I had the honor of representing our country and the chance to experience extraordinary moments, like becoming a world champion.”
“I’ll continue to follow Les Bleus with passion. I’m convinced that the future is bright and I can’t wait to see the next generation shine.”
Griezmann’s retirement comes only two weeks before France’s Nations League matches against Israel and Belgium.
The 33-year-old made his final appearance for his country on September 9 against Belgium, coming off the bench in France’s 2-0 triumph.
Griezmann began for France in a 3-1 Nations League loss to Italy in September, and his last appearance was as a substitute in a 2-0 victory over Belgium three days later.
He announced his decision ahead of the next international break in October, when France will face Israel and Belgium in the Nations League.
Griezmann has been a vital member of France’s squad under manager Didier Deschamps since his debut in 2014.
He was the leading scorer at Euro 2016 with six goals as hosts France finished second, losing to Portugal in the final.
Griezmann also appeared in the 2022 World Cup final, where France was defeated on penalties by Argentina following a dramatic 3-3 draw.
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
