Meet The New Twitter CEO; Parag Agrawal

Meet The New Twitter CEO; Parag Agrawal

A few hours ago, Twitter’s Jack Dorsey stepped down from the C.E.O. role and was replaced by Twitter’s chief technology officer; Parag Agrawal.

Agarwal’s name was first heard by many in Dorsey’s farewell email to employees, which was shared on Twitter.

Then all eyes turned to his successor, Parag Agrawal, who was thrust into the spotlight upon the news.

In an email to employees announcing he was stepping down, Dorsey hailed the naming of Agrawal as his successor, writing, “The board ran a rigorous process consideration all options and unanimously appointed Parag. He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs.”

“Parag has been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around,” Dorsey continued, adding, “He’s curious, probing, rational, creative, demanding, self-aware, and humble. He leads with heart and soul and is someone I learn from daily. My trust in him as our CEO is bone-deep,” Dorsey wrote.

For someone who now has one of the largest social networks in the world, Parag Agarwal is surprisingly private. Twitter’s new CEO rarely tweets, sometimes goes months without posting on the platform and often doesn’t choose to retweet, rather than share something personal.

The Indian-American technologist instead remained in the shadow of co-founder and outgoing CEO Jack Dorsey, under whose spotlight Agarwal should now step down as boss of the $37 billion firm.

Agrawal, 37, was born in India and holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

After studying computer science and engineering in Mumbai, Agarwal moved to the US to pursue a Ph.D. at Stanford University in California.

Parag Agrawal Agnesisika blogBefore joining Twitter in 2011, he had worked at Microsoft, AT&T, and Yahoo, according to Forbes.

Before replacing Dorsey as chief executive, Agrawal had been Twitter’s chief technology officer since October of 2017.

This has been a constant top priority for Agarwal, who joined Twitter 10 years ago when it had less than 1,000 employees. Starting as a software engineer, he worked his way up the corporate ladder to become Chief Technology Officer, just one step below Dorsey.

In an email to employees following the announcement of his new role – which was also shared on Twitter in keeping with the company’s policy of transparency – Agarwal firmly established himself as a people person.

“While it was a decade ago, those days feel like yesterday to me. I’ve walked in your place, I’ve seen ups and downs, challenges and obstacles, victories and mistakes. But then and now, above all, I am on Twitter.” I look forward to the incredible impact of our company, our continued progress, and the exciting opportunities ahead of us,” he wrote.

“I want you to #LoveWhereYouWork and love too How We work together for the maximum effect possible. I know some of you know me very well, some only a little, and some not at all. Let’s consider ourselves at the beginning – the first step towards our future.”

This ‘love where you work’ message is one Agarwal has consistently championed in recent years, as well as the #OneTeam corporate ethos.

The new boss thanked his predecessor for his “constant advice and friendship” and outlined his ambition for the company in the post-Dorsey era.

“Our purpose has never been more important. Our people and our culture are different than anything else in the world. There is no limit to what we can do together,” he wrote. “Let’s show the world the whole of Twitter Capacity.”

According to The New York Times, Agrawal helped rebuild Twitter’s “technical infrastructure,” has overseen the social media platform’s endeavors to incorporate cryptocurrencies, and advocated for the network to be transparent about the shortcomings of its algorithm.

He has also expressed his views on Twitter’s decisions on blocking certain users and content.

Congrats Agrawal!
