Motherhood: Teaching Kids About Anger Management: A Guide For Mothers (2)

As Mothers, we are the first teachers of our children. We have the responsibility of teaching them morals, this sets the foundation for their behavior. In my last article, the need to teach our children anger management was discussed. However, to be able to be successful in teaching our kids how to manage their anger.

Anger, in general, is a natural response to distressing situations, yet it often emerges in ways that can be intimidating, perplexing, or even detrimental. Consequently, anger is commonly labeled as a “negative” emotion, and its expression is perceived as harmful. This can make experiencing anger challenging for both children and adults.

In reality, anger is a sentiment that most people would rather avoid. However, when we understand anger, it has the potential to become a therapeutic, transformative, and empowering force. In the case of children, anger can be a reaction to situations in need of resolution. It can serve as a signal that more love, security, or protection is necessary. For children, experiencing anger can facilitate a better understanding of their own needs, self-care, and ways to release pent-up frustration. Anger does not have to be seen solely in a negative light.

As mothers, we need to guide our children, and support and instruct them as they learn to recognize and manage their anger. It is not always easy for them to grasp the concept of feeling angry. As mothers, we should not be too quick to stigmatize anger or portray it as an undesirable emotion to experience or express. Instead, we should teach our children to be mindful of their frustrations. We should help them understand why these feelings arise, how to express them constructively, and how to engage in solving the cause.
