No Exam Candidate Registered From Zamfara And Sokoto Public Secondary Schools – WAEC

No candidate from public schools in Zamfara and Sokoto states will sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, which will be held from May 16 to June 23.

Mr Patrick Areghan, the head of the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) Nigeria National Office, made the announcement on Monday, May 9, while briefing reporters on the council’s preparations and readiness for the examination in Nigeria.

While private schools in the states had registered their students for the exam, Areghan pointed out that “the reason why candidates from public schools were not registered remains unknown.”

Late registration of applicants, particularly by private schools, was also recorded and frowned at by the WAEC chief, who said that it is entirely unacceptable because it delays examination preparations.

Over 1.6 million candidates from 20,221 schools have enrolled for the exam, with 800,055 males (49.76 per cent) and 800,724 females (50.24 per cent).

The applicants would be tested in 76 subjects and 197 papers, with around 30,000 practicing senior teachers serving as supervisors, nominated by several Ministries of Education.

Although the National Identification Number (NIN) was declared a condition of the registration process, it was not made mandatory in order to avoid disqualifying numerous candidates.

The exam body urged parents and guardians to encourage their children to study hard and avoid any form of examination malpractice, as well as supervisors, to refrain from aiding and abetting examination malpractice by assisting candidates, particularly by letting them enter the Examination Hall with their mobile phones and using them.
