Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Sunday flagged off the rehabilitation of the N1.3 billion Ubakala Water Scheme and the Ariaria Water Scheme projects in Aba. The intervention is aimed at restoring potable water supply to residents and businesses in Nigeria’s commercial hub.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Otti said the two schemes collapsed years ago due to neglect and poor maintenance, forcing Aba residents to rely on boreholes and water vendors. He described the rehabilitation as a critical step toward improving public health and boosting economic activity in the city.
The Ubakala and Ariaria water projects are expected to serve thousands of households, markets, and industries across Aba. Contractors have been mobilized to replace aging pipes, upgrade treatment facilities, and install new pumping systems to ensure consistent water flow.
Governor Otti stressed that his administration would closely monitor the project to prevent cost overruns and delays. He warned contractors against cutting corners, saying Abians deserve infrastructure that lasts beyond political cycles.
The move has been welcomed by residents and traders in Ariaria International Market, who have long complained about the high cost of buying water. Many said a reliable public water supply would reduce operating costs for small businesses and improve sanitation.
With the flag-off, the Abia government says it is prioritizing water, roads, and healthcare as part of its urban renewal agenda. Officials added that similar upgrades are planned for other parts of the state to ensure equitable access to basic services.
