Senator Austin Akobundu has stated that the Nigerian Senate is committed to ensuring a safer and more secure airspace for Nigeria and her partners, and higher compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO’s standards and best practices.

Senator Akobundu stated this on Monday, 20th May, 2025, at the 18th Banjul Accord Group plenary meeting hosted by Nigeria in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

While presenting his paper at the summit, the Abia Central Senator stated that “From the legislative perspective, we will focus on the following: (a) Enhanced regulatory frameworks for safety and security (b) Improved oversight and compliance with ICAO standards and best practices.”

On his part, the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aersopace Development, Festus Keyamo, urged African nations to implement the single air transport market among African countries. He emphasised that the adoption of the policy will increase connectivity, reduce transit points for passengers, and other benefits.

The Banjul Accord Group was set up in January 2004 to harmonise civil aviation policies and to promote international aviation cooperation among member states. Members of the Group, including Cape Verde, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, attended the summit hosted by Nigeria in Abuja.
